Tools You’ll Need
How to Make Crock Pot Mashed Potatoes
- Place the peeled and cut russet potatoes into a crockpot.

- Pour broth over the potatoes and half of the butter, cubed.

- Cover the crockpot and cook on high heat for 3-4 hours, or on low heat for 6-7 hours, until the potatoes are tender and easily mashed with a fork.

- Once the potatoes are fully cooked, carefully drain any excess broth from the crockpot, and add the remaining butter, cream cheese, and heavy whipping cream. Cover and cook on high for 10 minutes.

- Add salt. Using a potato masher or an electric mixer, mash the potatoes directly in the crockpot until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust the salt as needed. Cover and keep potatoes on the warm setting until ready to serve.

- Garnish the top of potatoes with fresh chives, parsley, or extra butter, if desired.

Expert Tips, Substitutions and Variations
- Lighter Version: Substitute half-and-half or whole milk for the heavy cream for a lighter version. You can also use low-fat cream cheese or greek yogurt.
- Cut Potatoes Evenly: Cut the potatoes into even-sized chunks to ensure they cook at the same rate.
- Make It Vegan: Replace butter with vegan butter, cream cheese with a dairy-free alternative, and chicken broth with vegetable broth.
- Seasoning Boost: Incorporate fresh or dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or dill for an earthy, aromatic flavor. You can also add onion powder, white pepper, or black pepper.
- Chunky or Smooth: For chunkier mashed potatoes, mash lightly with a potato masher; for ultra-smooth potatoes, use a hand mixer, potato ricer, or immersion blender.
- Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Add minced cloves of garlic or garlic powder to the potatoes before cooking for a delicious garlic flavor.
- Cheesy Mashed Potatoes: Stir in shredded cheddar cheese or Parmesan cheese before serving for a cheesy twist.

This sounds delicious! Only 4 coming for Thanksgiving… can I half this recipe?
Oh yes! 🙂 it’ll cook quicker or you can even do it in a smaller crockpot.
Will the potatoes turn a grey color. A long time ago I tried to make them in the slow cooker & the color was not good.
These will not be grey if not overcooked 🙂
Can I use red potatoes?
Yes, just make sure not to overcook. I like to “smash” these with a potato masher instead of whip with the russet ones.
Can this be made the day before and then slowly reheated to bring back to warm?
Yes 🙂 Slowly and you can stir in a little warm milk or butter if necessary.
Can’t wait to do this one for Thanksgiving!! Anything to simplify the day without sacrificing the homemade aspect!!!
YAY!!! I hope you love it and have a wonderful Thanksgiving too!😁❤️
I tried the mashed potatoes for an early Thanksgiving. It was fabulous. I started it in the morning and never gave it a thought. Everyone loved them. I have a couple of
lactose- intolerant people in the family. They loved it, and the non-lactose-intolerant people loved it. I couldn’t ask for an easier recipe.
Awwww!! That makes my heart so happy to hear!! Thank you SO much!!!🥰 I love that you made them and like them so much!!! My heart is full!
Can’t wait to try for Thanksgiving. How long can you leave them on warm?
YAY!!! I hope you love it too!😁❤️ While they can hold for up to 4 hours, the quality is best within the first couple of hours. For longer holding, be prepared to add more liquid and stir more often.
I added a few garlic cloves amazing yummy
YAY!! I’m so happy you made it and liked them!
Can you double this successfully I have about 20 coming for Thanksgiving, this would make things so much easier?
My crockpot is an 8 quart and it would fit 10lb. 🙂
Followed recipe to a tee, mixed as lightly as possible and they turned out gummy. Not a complete waste but not as nice as expected.
This hasn’t happened to anyone who’s made them to my knowledge. Over cooking or over-mashing the potatoes are what will cause a gluey or gummy texture. Perhaps your crockpot cooks hotter than others. In this case, cook it for less time and stop as soon as they’re fork tender.
These were the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever had!! I will use this recipe from now on 👍
Aww!🥹You’re so sweet! Thank you SO much!!!🥰 I’m so happy they made the top of your list!!!
