Frequently Asked Questions
You can make this soup thicker by swapping some or all of the half and half with heavy cream or adding leftover mashed potatoes or instant potato flakes to the soup until you reach the consistency you like best.
You can whisk together a cornstarch slurry by combining ½-1 tablespoon cornstarch and ½-1 tablespoon water or milk. Whisk this mixture into the soup and allow it to simmer 5 minutes to thicken.
You can blend this soup completely with an emulsion blender or blender to a cohesive mix. Once blended, add it back to the saucepan to heat back up.
No, but it can easily be adapted. You can substitute the all purpose flour with a gluten-free flour alternative or use the cornstarch slurry thickening method as noted above.

Just made this for lunch. It’s spot on to the soup my family & I enjoyed this summer at DP’s Pirates Voyage in Myrtle Beach, SC. The white pepper gives it the umami flavor. Just added a few tablespoons of instant potato flakes to thicken it slightly. This soup is so comforting! Definitely will be making it often this fall & winter. Bonus: so quick & easy! This Soup is great with grilled ham & cheese sandwiches. Thank you !!!
Laura Ashley
This just made my heart SO happy to read! Thank you so much! I love that it brought back those yummy fun memories…and such a great idea with the potato flakes! Thank you so much, Jennifer!

Not sure why anyone would use canned veggies when you can buy shoestring carrots and so easy to fine chop or shoe string the others. I have not tried it yet but plan to using fresh veggies
Laura Ashley
They would use it because it’s a quick, convenient option as well. Both ways will work. Hope you love it!
Peg
I can't wait to try this. I wonder if it would be possible to add some potatoes for thickening and sub some milk for part of the half & half?
Laura Ashley
I’ve added some cubed potatoes in the past and it was delicious! Another person said they used instant potato flakes as a thickener. Yes, you could substitute some of the half & half with milk. If it’s not as thick as you’d like with the potatoes added, you could add a cornstarch slurry. I hope you LOVE it!
