Frequently Asked Questions
You can make this soup thicker by swapping some or all of the half and half with heavy cream or adding leftover mashed potatoes or instant potato flakes to the soup until you reach the consistency you like best.
You can whisk together a cornstarch slurry by combining ½-1 tablespoon cornstarch and ½-1 tablespoon water or milk. Whisk this mixture into the soup and allow it to simmer 5 minutes to thicken.
You can blend this soup completely with an emulsion blender or blender to a cohesive mix. Once blended, add it back to the saucepan to heat back up.
No, but it can easily be adapted. You can substitute the all purpose flour with a gluten-free flour alternative or use the cornstarch slurry thickening method as noted above.

Yes. Just let them come to room temperature or slightly steam before adding to the soup.

I’m gluten intolerant, so tried using Idahoan Garlic Mashed Potatoes (about 1/2 envelope..add a little at a time until you get the desired consistency) as the thickening agent. Tastes fabulous!
Laura Ashley
Suzanne! That's such a great idea! I'm so excited that you made it and that your thickening method worked. I will be sure to pass this along for others needing this gluten-free solution. I'm so happy you liked it!
Kimberly Burton

Not sure what I did wrong. I made the 3x version and all anyone could taste was pepper. I followed the directions to a T. It lacked any depth. Just a white pepper soup. Any tips would be appreciated because I love the soup at Stampede, I just want something close.
Laura Ashley
Thank you for making it!😊 I would say use half of the white pepper next time and then add more to your taste preference.
Joyce Somero
We love this soup. The only adjustment I will make is a little less white pepper. YumYum
Laura Ashley
Thank you SO much! I’m so happy you liked it too!😁

I would give this recipe 10 STARS!!
This soup is not only tasty as made, it's also a great base for variations. Add 8 oz. sliced mushrooms. Or add clams. My wife doesn't like the peas or green beans found in a can of mixed vegetables; so I cook and mash California Blend (cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots) and a half cup of sweet corn. She loves it!
I serve it with oyster crackers or corn bread.
Thank you for posting this recipe. It will become a staple in our house!
Laura Ashley
You are SOOO sweet! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this review! It truly means the world to me! I never thought of adding clams...that's such a great idea! I love the sound of the California veggies! I'm going to be trying these too! And cornbread...you're speakin' my language! Thank you so much again!!!
Amanda
Incredibly rich and complex flavors for a soup that comes together in less than 15 minutes! So delicious. We will definitely make this recipe again.
Laura Ashley
FANTASTIC!! I'm so happy you made it and liked it so much! It means a lot to me!!

hi Laura made this soup before and it came out delicious! I am now making 3X the amount for a bigger group. if I add rice how much would I make for this size pot and could I add diced chicken?
Laura Ashley
OH this is wonderful!! THANK YOU for making it and loving it so much! I love the idea of adding rice and chicken. I haven't tried it but I'd say with 3x the amount, you could add 1-2 cups of rice and 1-2 cups of chicken. If too thick, you could add some cream. Perhaps start with adding the smaller amount of the rice and chicken and add more to the texture you like. 🙂

I added a cubed russset potato in with the vegetables to boil to thicken it up real nice. Worked great!!
Laura Ashley
FANTASTIC!! I'm so happy you made it and liked it so much! Love that addition of the potato! YUM!

I did a 3x batch but only did 2 tsp white pepper because I thought three sounded like too much. Even without the full amount it was waaay too peppery. It not only does not taste like Dixie Stampede, it isn't even good at all.
Laura Ashley
Sorry it wasn't a hit for you.
Ragan
This turned out like green baby food for me. Yet followed the recipe step by step. I guess I'll stick to ordering my soup from dolly
Laura Ashley
Sorry yours didn't come out correctly.
Melissa
We went to the Dolly Stampede in Branson last week and we loved this soup so I had to find a recipe. I just made yours and doubled the batch and my husband said it’s just like Dolly’s! Thank you! So good!
Laura Ashley
Your review just made me smile SO BIG!! THANK YOU! I love that you just had the real thing and then felt my dupe was spot on! My day is made! 🙂
Renee Grow
This soup is spot on! I didn’t have onion powder so I chopped up 1/4 onion. I don’t like the flavor of canned vegall so I used 16 oz frozen mixed vegetables lightly puréed when cooked. The only negative is 1 tsp. white pepper is a little heavy. I will make it again!
Laura Ashley
Wonderful!! I'm so so happy it was such a hit! Thank you for the review and sharing how the frozen/pureed veggies worked out so well! I'll also make a note to others to adjust the white pepper too. THANK YOU!! 🙂
Keri
Can you use regular black pepper instead of white?
Laura Ashley
Yes you can 🙂
