TART APPLES FOR Apple Crescent roll Cinnamon Rolls

Apples that lend a more tart flavor with a hint of sweetness and keep their shape during the baking process works best. I recommend using Granny Smith or honey crisp as they meet these qualifications perfectly. However, other varieties that could work as well are cosmic crisp, gala, Braeburn or Jonagold apples.

    What is Cinnadust?

Cinnadust is a cinnamon spice blend that tastes like the cereal. It has notes of caramel, vanilla and graham flavor along with cinnamon and sugar. It can be sprinkled on bagels, toast, cookies, ice cream, and desserts like my Apple Butter Pull-Apart Loaf. There are lots of Cinnadust recipes on the brands website too.

If you don't have Cinnadust, simply mix together ½ cup granulated sugar and 1-1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon.

    Tips and Variations

    • Crescent Roll Alternatives: If you prefer, you can use puff pastry instead of crescent rolls. Puff pastry gives the dish a flakier texture. You can also make crescent rolls from scratch!
    • To Glaze or Not to Glaze: The glaze can be omitted, if desired.
    • Cream Cheese Frosting: If you want a thicker cream cheese frosting, mix together 2 oz softened cream cheese, ¼ cup powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons maple syrup, ½  teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste, ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon

What to serve with Crescent Roll Cinnamon Rolls

Apple cinnamon crescent rolls can also be complemented with a variety of side dishes and accompaniments

    1. Breakfast Casserole: The sweetness of the rolls pairs perfectly with a savory, protein rich casserole.
    2. Breakfast Meats and Meat Substitutes: For a boost of protein and savoriness, pair the sweet rolls with cooked bacon, sausage, ham, or a breakfast meat alternative.
    3. Vanilla Ice Cream: Warm apple cinnamon crescent rolls paired with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream create a heavenly dessert.
    4. Whipped Cream: A dollop of freshly whipped cream on top of warm apple cinnamon crescent rolls adds a light and airy sweetness. It melts slightly, creating a delightful sauce that enhances the flavors.
    5. Caramel Sauce: Drizzle warm caramel sauce over the apple cinnamon crescent rolls for a rich and indulgent treat. Caramel and apples is the perfect combination.
    6. Powdered Sugar: Dusting the rolls with powdered sugar just before serving adds a touch of sweetness and a beautiful finishing touch.
    7. Fresh Fruit Salad: Serve the rolls alongside a refreshing fruit salad made with seasonal fruits like berries, oranges, and grapes. The crispness of the fruit salad contrasts nicely with the soft texture of the rolls.
    8. Yogurt Parfait: Create a yogurt parfait with layers of vanilla or cinnamon-flavored yogurt, granola, and fresh fruits.
    9. Baked Apples: Serve warm baked apples as a side dish. The natural sweetness of baked apples harmonizes well with the cinnamon in the crescent rolls, creating a harmonious flavor profile.
    10. Nuts and Caramel Drizzle: Garnish the apple cinnamon crescent rolls with chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts) and a drizzle of caramel sauce. The crunch of the nuts and the gooey caramel add texture and richness to the dish.

    Storage and Freezing

Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container up to 2-3 days. Reheat leftovers in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. Freezing isn’t ideal for these rolls as they are best enjoyed fresh. However, you can freeze in them in a freezer safe container up to 2 months. Thaw overnight before reheating in the microwave.
