  • Self-Rising Flour: This provides the foundation for the rolls and contains baking powder and salt, which help them rise without needing extra yeast.
  • Canola or Vegetable Oil: Adds moisture and richness to the soft dough.
  • Egg: Acts as a binding agent, helping to give the rolls structure while adding a bit of richness.
  • Granulated Sugar: Helps activate the yeast and adds a touch of sweetness to balance the flavors.
  • Quick-Rise Yeast: This instant yeast allows the dough to rise faster, cutting down on prep time – hence, QUICK dinner rolls!
  • Lukewarm Water: Activates the yeast and hydrates the flour, creating a dough that’s easy to work with. Warm water, not hot! A water temperature of 110°F is ideal.

Pro Tips and Substitutions

  • Flour: If you don’t have self-rising flour, you can make your own by combining all-purpose flour with baking powder and salt (2 cups flour + 1 tablespoon, baking powder + 1 teaspoon salt).
  • Oil: Use melted butter or olive oil for a different flavor profile; just remember to adjust for richness.
  • Sweetener: You can substitute granulated sugar with honey or agave syrup for a natural sweetness. The rolls will yield and slightly different texture.
  • Dairy-Free Option: Use unsweetened almond milk or any non-dairy milk instead of water for a dairy-free roll. Adjust the baking time as needed.
  • Add Mix-Ins: These buttery dinner rolls have the best flavor, but feel free to mix in fresh or dried herbs, garlic powder, or shredded cheese to switch up the flavor of your rolls.
  • Toppers and Dippers: These rolls are excellent with butter, garlic butter, honey butter, cinnamon honey butter, or one of these Infused Olive Oil Recipes!

Storage

Cool the rolls completely and store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, keep them in the fridge, and they’ll stay fresh for about a week.

These rolls freeze well! Place cooled rolls in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months. To reheat, just thaw at room temperature and warm them in the oven for a few minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my quick yeast rolls not rise?

If your rolls didn’t rise, it may be due to expired yeast or water that was too hot or too cold. Always check your yeast’s expiration date and ensure the water is lukewarm (about 110°F) for optimal activation.

Can I add herbs or cheese to the dough?

Absolutely! Feel free to mix in dried herbs, garlic powder, or shredded cheese.

Can I make quick yeast rolls ahead of time?

While it’s best to bake these easy dinner rolls right after making the dough, you can prepare the dough, cover with plastic wrap, and place it in the fridge for up to 2 hours before baking. Freshly mixing will give you the best results!

How do you make self-rising flour from all-purpose flour?

If you don’t have self-rising flour, you can make your own by combining all-purpose flour with baking powder and salt. For 1 cup of self-rising flour, you’ll need 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Can I use regular yeast in Quick Yeast Rolls instead of rapid-rise yeast?

Yes, they can be substituted for one another 1:1. However, active dry yeast rise time is a lot slower than rapid rise yeast.

  2. Laura,
I’m going to make the yeast rolls but only have regular yeast, not quick rise. Any suggestions on what to do? Other than go back to the store.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Ginger! I’m so sorry to say I haven’t tried with the other yeast options, so I can’t say how they’ll turn out.

    2. I would think you would need to “bloom” the yeast for 10 minutes in the lukewarm water.
