An easy side or appetizer, this Chicken Crescent Ring uses just seven ingredients including stuffing mix and cream of chicken soup for simple assembly.

One of the best things about the Crescent Roll Chicken Ring is its versatility. You can use chicken or turkey as your protein and change up the cheese to whichever shredded blend you prefer. You can also use 2 packages of crescent rolls if you like more breading on the exterior.

  • Pillsbury Crescent Rolls: Serves as the outer layer of the dish. It provides a flaky, buttery, and slightly crispy texture, creating a delicious contrast to the creamy filling inside.

How to make Cheesy Stuffing and Chicken Ring

  1. Grease a large skillet or 13”x9” baking dish. Unroll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Arrange the crescent rolls in a circle, short side in the middle/pointed ends out, slightly overlapping.

  1. With a small rolling pin or fingertips, flatten the center of dough about 3” wide.

  1. For the filling, in a large bowl, mix together chicken, stuffing, cheese and broth.

  1. Once combined, scoop the filling evenly onto the flattened base. Bring the points of the dough to the center of the ring and tuck under.

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together cream of chicken soup and milk. Once combined, pour around and in the center of the chicken ring.

  1. Bake in preheated 375°F oven for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is melted.  See “Tips and Variations” for baking adjustments if using 2 cans of rolls.

Tips and Variations

  • Stretching the Volume: You can also use 2 cans of Pillsbury Crescent Roll Dough in this crescent roll ring if you’re feeding more folks or want more breading on the exterior. Simply place the rolls more closely together in the center before flattening the base. Make sure to flatten well so that the dough cooks properly underneath. The flattened area should nearly cover the entire base of the pan. Bake an additional 4-6 minutes if needed.
  • Fresh Versus Pre-Seasoned Chicken: Seasoned rotisserie chicken or leftover chicken saves time. It’s flavorful and shreds easily for the filling. However, you can use fresh cooked chicken as well. Just ensure you season it. You might consider seasoning with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and/or poultry seasoning. You can also season up well-drained canned chicken.
  • Different Proteins: You can substitute chicken with cooked turkey. Add/adjust seasonings accordingly.
  • Homemade Stuffing: If you don’t have store-bought Stove-Top in your area or prefer homemade, you can make it from scratch:
    • 6 cups cubed day stale bread, 2 tablespoons dried parsley, 1/3 cup dried minced onion, 1/3 cup dried celery flakes, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon dried flaky sage, 1 teaspoon dried flaky oregano, 1 teaspoon salt
  • Cheese Varieties: Swiss is our favorite with this dish, but you can experiment with different cheese types such as cheddar, mozzarella, or pepper jack.
  • Crescent Roll Alternatives: If you prefer, you can use puff pastry instead of crescent rolls. Puff pastry gives the dish a flakier texture. You can also make crescent rolls from scratch!
  • Soup Variations: Regular, low-sodium, no sodium broth can all be used in this dish. If you don’t like using cream of chicken soup from a can, here is how you can make it from scratch:
    • Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in ⅓ cup all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute. Whisk in ⅓ cup milk and ⅓ cup chicken broth until well combined. Season with ¼ teaspoon onion powder and salt and pepper to taste. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes or until thickened and creamy.

What to serve with a Chicken Crescent Roll Ring

This chicken crescent ring is hearty and pairs perfectly with many vegetable side dishes. I would recommend a green vegetable as it looks pretty along with it as well as being a yummy combination. Gremolata Asparagus or Crispy Green Beans are a couple go-to sides. It’s also excellent with sliced tomatoes, steamed broccoli, or a simple side salad.

Storage and Freezing

Refrigeration: If you have leftovers, let the ring cool to room temperature and then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Consume within 2-3 days.

Freezing: While fresh is best with this dish, you can freeze it. Wrap the entire cooled ring or individual portions tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil. Alternatively, you can use a freezer-safe airtight container. The ring can be frozen for up to 2-3 months. After this period, the quality may begin to deteriorate.

Reheating: If frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Cover the ring with foil to prevent excessive browning and place it in the oven. Heat for about 20-25 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Serve with additional, fresh-made gravy if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prevent the filling from leaking out of the crescent ring?

If using 1 can of crescent rolls, the filling will be exposed between each roll. They’ll be more enclosed if using 2 cans. The balance of the cheese, stuffing, chicken, and broth will hold the filling together while the gravy/sauce around the side will serve as a topper/dipping element to the ring.

Can I make the ring in advance and bake it later?

Yes. Assemble the crescent roll and filling as directed BUT don’t add the chicken/milk mixture around the ring until you’re ready to bake it. Cover the ring with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate it until you’re ready to bake it. You can store the assembled but unbaked ring in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Do I need to brush crescent rolls with egg wash before baking?

This is not a necessary step, but if you’d like extra browning on the surface, you can brush it with an egg wash.

What is the best way to reheat a crescent roll ring?
