With over a million likes and views, it’s no surprise the French Onion Chicken dish became my most viral TikTok yet! It’s simple and is the quintessential comfort food. I decided to test adding a little va-va-voom with sliced onions, cheese and crispy onion straws. Whoa! It took it to the next level! Let me know what you think!
(Note: Crockpot variation listed at the bottom of the instructions.)
This is fantastic!! I’m so happy you made it and liked it! The addition of those mushrooms will take it over the top!
Hi Richard! I’m SO happy you and your wife liked the recipe so much! More cheese…even better! 😉 Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday! Happy New year!
Thank you so much!! It’s an excellent dinner to have in the rotation of easy, yummy options! 🙂
Thank you so much, Willy!! I’m so happy you made it and it was a win with your family!!
You could omit, but I think it might be a bit soupy since the rice soaks up the moisture. It would still be very flavorful.
I made this tonight for dinner. It was so good! My husband loved it. With every bite, he just kept saying how good it was. I couldn’t find any boneless, skinless chicken thighs at the store, so I used bone-in thighs instead. I seasoned them well on the fleshy side, sprinkled them with smoked paprika on the skin side, and seared them in a shallow pan of oil until the skin was crispy and brown. I did everything else according to the recipe, except I only used one packet of the Lipton onion soup mix. I was afraid 2oz(2 packets), which the recipe called for would have made it too salty. I will definitely be making this again!
Tonya, I’m SOOO happy you made it and it was a win! Love the bone-in and sear step that you did! I imagine that had great flavor. Also, I want to thank you for pointing out the soup mix packet listed step. It actually is only 1 of the packets, not both of them, and the ingredient posted was incorrect. It would definitely be too salty with 2 packets. I’ve corrected it on here and on Instagram. Again, I’m so happy you made this and shared that your family liked it too!! 🙂
I’m so happy you made it and liked it. Here are the troubleshoots I’ve had for those with the rice still slightly crunchy: 1.)make sure the rice is rinsed 2.)make sure it’s securely covered so it cooks the rice with the steam 3.)some folks have said theirs needed about 10 minutes longer in the covered time and it worked 4.)making sure the oven temp is right (I know that’s silly, but one lady cooked hers at 325) Convection vs Conventional oven times can vary 5.) Not changing the ingredients (again, kind of silly but someone doubled the rice without changing the liquid). In your case with brown rice, it might’ve needed a 1/2 cup more liquid and 10 minutes more covered time 😉 6.) make sure the rice isn’t expired. I hope when you make it again it turns out perfect 🙂
So here’s the thing…flavors are on point but rice is not cooked. I am working on perfecting it but ultimately I would make this dish without the rice and serve it atop rice cooked separately. Interestingly, the undercooked rice is not horrible. It reminds me of those Asian salads made with uncooked Ramen.
I’m so happy you made it and likely the flavors. You can add more broth or butter if you would like it more moist. I’m glad you tried it!
Found this recipe on TikTok and love it! My husband says it’s his favorite dish now.
Thank you!! It truly is! I made a double batch this weekend for 8 people and it was a big hit 🙂
can I add brocoli?
Yes! That would be a great addition. I’ve added mushrooms in the past.
Next level is right! What a wonderful dish! Next time I make it I’m going to add Crimini mushrooms! Thanks for sharing!
This is fantastic!! I’m so happy you made it and liked it! The addition of those mushrooms will take it over the top!
Made this last night. I was sooooo good. I will keep this on my regular dinners to make. So easy and so delicious.
Thank you so much, Sarah!! I’m SO happy that you made it and liked it so much!! It’s such a perfect weeknight, cozy, easy dinner! Happy New Year!!
This recipe was so easy to make. I added extra cheese when I added the crispy onions and baked it for 10 minutes instead of the 15. But was very delicious and the wife loved it also!
Hi Richard! I’m SO happy you and your wife liked the recipe so much! More cheese…even better! 😉 Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday! Happy New year!
5 stars isn’t enough for this dish! Was a big hit for the whole family
Aww!! Michelle, I’m SOOO happy you and your family loved the dish so much!! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season!!
This is amazing!!
Thank you so much!! It’s an excellent dinner to have in the rotation of easy, yummy options! 🙂
The chicken sounds wonderful but my husband won’t eat chicken so I’m thinking about substituting sliced beef (seared quickly for some color) instead of the chicken🤔
I haven’t tried it but could imagine seared cube steaks being yummy. Also, thick-cut boneless or bone-in pork chops works great!
What if the chicken thighs are boned and skinned?
Hi Britney! Bone-in and skinned would be totally fine too! 🙂
This chicken dish is incredible, our family loves it.
Thank you so much, Willy!! I’m so happy you made it and it was a win with your family!!
Do you have to add rice
You could omit, but I think it might be a bit soupy since the rice soaks up the moisture. It would still be very flavorful.
This. Was. DELICIOUS! All I did differently was add black pepper on top of the chicken. My husband, 12 & 14 year old boys LOVED it! A Must try for ALL.
Laurie, that is WONDERFUL!!! I’m SO SO happy you made it and the whole family loved it! Totally has made my day!!!
Could you do this in the crockpot?
Yes 🙂 In the recipe instructions, you’ll see the Crockpot Version directions at the bottom. It’s great that way!
Do you need to rinse rice before if doing in the oven?
Yes, rinse the rice then mix with the ingredients. 🙂
Can u use frozen chicken breast?
Great question! I haven’t tried from a completely frozen state, so I can’t say for sure. It would likely need an adjustment of time/temp. 🙂

Was I supposed to cook the long grain rice mine was a little hard but the dish had amazing flavor!
would swiss work?
Yes! Swiss would be great!
Can you substitute diatalli pasta instead of rice
I haven’t tried subbing pasta, but someone on TikTok said they subbed with Penne pasta and that it turned out great. 🙂
Is it ok to use frozen chicken?
I’m sure it is, but it might need additional time?!? I’m not quite sure on how long since I haven’t tried doing that. 🙂
Any luck freezing this? I’m 34 weeks pregnant w/ #3 and I’m trying to build a freezer stash!
Thanks!
Yes! This freezes and thaws/reheats great! 🙂 Congrats on your pregnancy too! You’ve got some special moments coming up very soon! So happy for you!
Made this tonight and my husband and I both loved it! But there is quite a bit left over; can I freeze the leftovers?
Yes! This freezes and thaws/reheats great! 🙂
I used brown rice and it was still crispy but besides that the dish tasted very good..I’ll definitely try again with white rice or I’ll just make it on the side next time

Is there something I could use in place of the can of French onion soup? I can’t find it in my town!
You might want to check the Progresso area, they have one as well. You could also use a little more broth and a cream of mushroom can instead. Hope you love it!

I tried this recipe last night. I did add a little more shredded cheese..it was delicious..a keeper!
I’m SO happy you made it and liked it!! I LOVE the sound of more cheese too 😉
Is there a reason the rice stuck to the bottom of the pan? I did use jasmine rice and not long grain rice. Could that be the reason? The recipe was still awesome and my family loved it. Thank you for sharing.
So happy you made it and liked it!! I’m guessing the different rice would be the only cause. I haven’t tried it with Jasmine, but that would be my only guess😁
Can you make this with minute rice? Or will it cook too fast and be soggy/mushy?
Yes, you can use minute rice. It’ll have a slightly different texture, but it’ll be yummy too 🙂
I forgot the butter, will it make a huge difference?
I did the same thing over Christmas at my mom’s, and it was still super delicious! I hope you loved it!
It was very dry
You can add more broth or butter if you would like it more moist. I’m glad you tried it!
Yum.
THANK YOU! It’s amazing!
What size baking dish would you use if you were only making half this recipe?
I would say an 8×8 or 9×9 would work. 🙂
Do i need to cook the rice first?
No, it’s rinsed, raw long-grain rice 🙂
Can’t have rice due to the carbs. What else can I use to absorb the soup. Any suggestions?
I haven’t done it myself, but a follower on TikTok subbed cauliflower rice. Also, another follower subbed a low-carb pasta for the rice. ☺️
I made this tonight and it was amazing!
That’s FANTASTIC!!! Thank you for sharing! I’m so happy you made it and liked it!!
Bad ass chicken and rice👍👍 Grandsons love it, feeds a few people too
YES! YES! YESSS!!! I love it! So excited you made it and it was such a win!!! 🙂
Question! Can this be prepped a day ahead of time? If so, would I just follow the recipe as is or would I have to change anything?
Thank you in advance!
Hi Rebecca! That’s a great question. You can assemble ahead of time and refrigerate (except for crispy onions). Just let it come to room temperature 30 minutes before baking. I hope you love it too!
Found this recipe on TikTok and love it! My husband says it’s his favorite dish now.
Aww!! That makes my heart so happy to hear! I’m so happy you made it and it was such a hit with you and your hubby!!
Loved it ! You’re a delight to watch .
Aww! 🙂 Thank you so much!! I’m so happy you liked it!!
Does it have to cook that long? Looking for quicker version
Yes, the crockpot version at the bottom of this one is the quickest methods I’ve already tested ☺️
What an easy and yummy dish to take to friend or family.
Thank you!! It truly is! I made a double batch this weekend for 8 people and it was a big hit 🙂
I tried this tonight on company. It was really yummy. I was heavy handed with cheese and butter, but otherwise followed directions. Chicken was so moist! Will definitely make it again and 2 guests asked for recipe. ☺️
That is just wonderful!!! I’m so happy you made it and it was a hit with everyone!
