Next Level French Onion Chicken

With over a million likes and views, it’s no surprise the French Onion Chicken dish became my most viral TikTok yet! It’s simple and is the quintessential comfort food. I decided to test adding a little va-va-voom with sliced onions, cheese and crispy onion straws. Whoa! It took it to the next level! Let me know what you think!
(Note: Crockpot variation listed at the bottom of the instructions.)

Ingredients

  • 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 10.5oz Campbell’s French Onion Soup
  • 14.5oz can beef or chicken broth (regular or low-sodium)
  • 1 1/2 cups long grain rice (you can reduce to 1 cup if desired)
  • 1/4 cup butter, cut into slices
  • 2-2 1/2lb boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded or 6-6oz slices cheese
  • (Italian cheese blend, provolone or gruyere)
  • 1oz packet Lipton Onion Soup Mix
  • 1 cup French’s Crispy Fried Onions
  • Recipe

Preheat the oven to 350°F. To a 13”x9” baking dish, whisk together sliced onion, French onion soup, broth and rice. Disperse butter on top followed by the chicken. Sprinkle the cheese and onion soup mix on top, cover tightly with foil and bake 1 hour 15 minutes. Remove the foil, evenly distribute the fried onion pieces and bake an additional 15 minutes. ***CROCKPOT VERSION CHANGES: #1 Lower the rice volume to 1 to 1 1/4 cups. Make sure to use rinsed long-grain white rice. Minute rice will be mushy. Other rice varieties might work, but I cannot speak to them. #2 Sprinkle the Lipton Onion Soup Mix before sprinkling on the cheese. #3 Cook covered securely with the lid on HIGH for 2-3 hours. As seen in the video, the liquid will completely absorb and rice will be tender but not mushy. Slow cooker times/temps can vary. Use your judgement on your cooking model. #4 Sprinkle the Crispy Fried Onions on once the cook-time is complete.

This recipe was so easy to make. I added extra cheese when I added the crispy onions and baked it for 10 minutes instead of the 15. But was very delicious and the wife loved it also!

The chicken sounds wonderful but my husband won’t eat chicken so I’m thinking about substituting sliced beef (seared quickly for some color) instead of the chicken🤔

I made this tonight for dinner. It was so good! My husband loved it. With every bite, he just kept saying how good it was. I couldn’t find any boneless, skinless chicken thighs at the store, so I used bone-in thighs instead. I seasoned them well on the fleshy side, sprinkled them with smoked paprika on the skin side, and seared them in a shallow pan of oil until the skin was crispy and brown. I did everything else according to the recipe, except I only used one packet of the Lipton onion soup mix. I was afraid 2oz(2 packets), which the recipe called for would have made it too salty. I will definitely be making this again!

I used brown rice and it was still crispy but besides that the dish tasted very good..I’ll definitely try again with white rice or I’ll just make it on the side next time

So here’s the thing…flavors are on point but rice is not cooked. I am working on perfecting it but ultimately I would make this dish without the rice and serve it atop rice cooked separately. Interestingly, the undercooked rice is not horrible. It reminds me of those Asian salads made with uncooked Ramen.

Is there a reason the rice stuck to the bottom of the pan? I did use jasmine rice and not long grain rice. Could that be the reason? The recipe was still awesome and my family loved it. Thank you for sharing.

Can you make this with minute rice? Or will it cook too fast and be soggy/mushy?

Can’t have rice due to the carbs. What else can I use to absorb the soup. Any suggestions?

Question! Can this be prepped a day ahead of time? If so, would I just follow the recipe as is or would I have to change anything?

    Thank you in advance!

I tried this tonight on company. It was really yummy. I was heavy handed with cheese and butter, but otherwise followed directions. Chicken was so moist! Will definitely make it again and 2 guests asked for recipe. ☺️
