How to Make French Dip Crescent Ring

    1. Unroll crescent rolls, separating each triangle. Arrange in the shape of a sun, with the short ends slightly overlapping.
Flatten the center dough slightly to create the center base.
    1. On the base, layer the filling in this order: half of the cheese slices, horseradish sauce, roast beef, more horseradish sauce (if desired) the remaining cheese, and fried onions.
    1. Bring the tips of the dough over the filling and tuck underneath the center base.
    1. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with a fork. Brush the top of the ring with the egg and sprinkle with parsley and garlic powder.
    1. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
    2. Meanwhile, make Au jus per package directions. Pour into a small serving bowl. Once the ring is done, place the bowl in the center of the ring.

    Tips and Substitutions

    • Crescent Roll Dough: Keep the crescent roll tubes in the fridge until you’re ready to use them to avoid them from sticking together. If you prefer a homemade touch, you can make your own crescent roll dough.
    • Deli Roast Beef: Opt for high-quality deli roast beef, or you can use leftover homemade roast beef. If your meat has excess moisture, pat dry with a paper towel as this can make the crescent roll dough soggy.
    • Provolone Cheese: Substitute Swiss or Gruyère cheese for a slightly different flavor. Pepper jack can add a hint of spice.
    • Horseradish: Adjust the amount of horseradish sauce to your taste preference. You can also use Dijon mustard for a tangy alternative.
    • Crispy Onions: Make your own crispy onions by frying thinly sliced onions.
    • Egg Wash: If you don't have an egg, you can brush the crescent roll ring with melted butter or milk for a golden finish.
    • Au Jus: Make a quick au jus by mixing beef broth with a splash of Worcestershire sauce and seasoning to taste.
    • Garlic Powder: Fresh minced garlic can be used as a substitute for garlic powder. Simply whisk into the egg white wash.
    • Customize Fillings: Feel free to add or substitute ingredients like sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, or spinach for added flavor and variety.
    • Pan Size: If you don't have a pizza pan or round stone, you can make the ring in an oval shape on a large sheet pan. You can also line your pan with parchment paper or grease with butter or non-stick spray if it does not have a non-stick surface.
    • Sandwich Ring Size: This recipe can be halved if desired. Simply create a smaller sun shape with 1 can of dough and halve the remaining ingredients.

    Storage and Reheating

This French Dip sandwich ring is best eaten fresh after it’s made, as crescent rolls get softer the longer they’re stored. However, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3-4 days.

Reheat leftovers in the microwave until heated through. You can also place on a baking sheet and reheat in a 325°F oven for about 10-12 minutes or until heated through. Reheating in the airfryer is another option. Heat your desired size slice at 400°F for 5-8 minutes, or until warm throughout.

What to Serve with French Dip Crescent Ring

If served as a main entree, this ring is perfect paired with a side salad, raw vegetables and dip, easy cooked vegetables or soup.

Bringing to a get-together, a few favorite appetizers to pair with it are Hanky Panky Sliders, Copycat Chick-fil-A Sandwich Minis, and Simple Cheesy Buffalo Chicken Dip!

    Frequently Asked Questions

My dough keeps tearing when I try to make the French Dip Crescent Ring. What can I do?

Make sure to pull the crescent roll dough from the refrigerator only when you’re ready to position it on your pan. As it comes to room-temperature, it becomes more soft and harder to work with.

Can I use homemade crescent roll dough?

While I prefer the ease of using ready-made crescent roll dough, you can certainly make homemade dough from scratch.

How many people will this serve?

You can slice the ring in as many as 16 slices. This is ideal for serving at a party where there are more food options. If serving it as a meal, this ring serves about 4-6 people.

How far in advance can I make a French Dip Crescent Ring before baking in the oven?

You can assemble the ring in advance and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. Assemble per your recipe, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, and store it in the refrigerator. You might need to adjust the baking time slightly as chilled dough may take a bit longer to cook through.

I made a smaller version for my husband & I, using just 1 pkg of crescent rolls & adjusting the portion of ingredients. The flavor was good, but the center of the ring was a little doughy. It was like the the liquid from meat or melted cheese kept dough from cooking.

A couple thing that could've caused this: 1) The bread wasn't pressed thin enough at the base - this causes it to be doughy. 2) Ingredient brands that contain more water that leach into the dough. I hope next time it's perfect 🙂
