Expert Tips

  • A homemade version of a Lipton Onion Soup Mix packet can be used instead of store-bought.
    • For 1 packet, simply combine 2 ½ tablespoons dried minced onion, 4 cubes regular or reduced sodium beef bouillon, crumbled, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ⅛ teaspoon salt, ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper.
  • For a healthier alternative, you can use light sour cream or plain Greek yogurt in place of regular sour cream.
  • If your grocery store doesn’t have Philadelphia Garlic & Herb Whipped Cream Cheese Spread, you can substitute it with the chive flavor or 8 ounce plain whipped cream cheese, a brick of regular cream cheese, or a brick of plain light cream cheese mixed.
    • Along with one of these plain cream cheeses, add 1 minced garlic clove or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon dried herbs (such as an Italian seasoning blend), 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black or white pepper.
  • Instead of crispy fried onions, you can also top this herb dip with green onions, fresh chives, or fresh herbs. They can add a pop of color and freshness.

Serving Herb and Onion Dip

This onion dip has all the ease, savoriness, and texture you’re looking for in a yummy dip. It’s excellent served with raw vegetables (carrot sticks, cucumber slices, celery sticks), crackers, pretzels, plain potato chips, pita chips, or toasted baguette slices. It’s also excellent on a roast beef or meatball sandwich.

To serve this classic party appetizer, find a pretty serving dish or vegetable tray that you can pour the dip into and assemble the crisp vegetables and/or savory dippers around it.

Homemade French’s Crispy Fried Onions

If you prefer that home crispy fried onion goodness, you can also make them from scratch to top this dip with.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups whole buttermilk
  • 1 cup thinly sliced onions, halves and rings of yellow, vidalia, or sweet onions
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups canola or vegetable oil

Method:

  • Soak onions in buttermilk for 10 minutes.
  • In a plastic resealable bag or bowl, combine flour, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  • In a large skillet, heat oil to 375F.
  • Transfer the buttermilk soaked onions into the flour mixture. Toss or shake until all of the onions are coated well.
  • Add the onions to the oil, frying in batches if necessary. Fry until they’re golden brown, then transfer with a slotted spoon to a paper towel lined plate.
  • Use immediately or store in an airtight container in a dry cool place for 1-2 days.

Top the dip with these crispy onions when you’re ready to serve it.

Storage

This dip is best consumed within 3-4 days of preparation. The longer the dip sits in the refrigerator, the more the flavors may meld, which can be a positive thing up to a point, but the dip will lose freshness and quality over an extended period.

Wait to add the crispy onions to the top until you’re ready to serve as these will soften over time. Remove the onions from the top before refrigerating leftovers. You can add fresh crispy onions when you’re ready to serve it again.

It’s not recommended to freeze this dip as the texture of cream cheese can change upon thawing, becoming crumbly. Additionally, the onions might release water when thawed, altering the consistency.
