This simple, easy Sloppy Joe pie is a twist on a childhood favorite. It is comfort food, budget-friendly, and a meal the whole family will love!
Like most of you, my love for the Sloppy Joe came at a very early age. They always take me back to my small-town grocery store, Bob’s Supermarket. Everyone working and shopping you would know and they’d be ready to catch up on all the local happenings.
There were only 3 aisles at Bob’s filled with just the necessities. Prize taxidermy animals from his hunting adventures lined the entire top of the store (which was semi-scary but cool too), and Bob always got a kick out of me needing to “test the grapes” to make sure they were good for customers. One of my earliest memories at Bob’s was my mom putting that classic Manwich can in her cart.
I thought that can was a delicacy and that we were celebrating something special. Fast forward 30 years later, and I still love a classic Manwich just as much! One night recently, it crossed my mind to make a Sloppy Joe with a Southern cornbread twist. It only took one trial, and it was a SUCCESS! The addition of cheese, a few spices, and a moist, sweet cornbread base took a Sloppy Joe to the next level!

How to Make Sloppy Joe Pie
- First, make the base of the pie. While the oven is preheating to 400ºF, place the skillet in the oven. In a medium bowl, blend together the egg, creamed corn, sour cream, and Jiffy. Remove the skillet from the oven, butter the dish, and pour in the base mixture. Bake for 20 minutes.
- For the meat topping, in a large skillet on medium-high heat, crumble and cook the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain the grease in a colander or with a paper towel, then stir in the chopped onion and seasonings. Simmer for 2 minutes.
- Add the Manwich sauce and ½ cup water. Stir and simmer on low for 5 minutes. Fold in ¼ cup of the shredded cheese.
- Carefully remove the base from the oven. Poke holes in the surface of the cooked cornbread base. Pour the beef mixture on top of the base and spread out evenly. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Tent and cover with aluminum foil. Bake the sloppy joe pie for 20 minutes.
- Uncover and broil on high for an additional 3-5 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow the pie to cool for 10 minutes. This is important so that it doesn’t fall apart when you slice and serve it.
Tips and Substitutions
- Homemade Manwich sauce also works great in this recipe. Here is how I make mine:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the following: ¾ cup tomato sauce, ¾ cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons brown sugar or brown sugar substitute, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1 ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon yellow mustard, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon salt
- You can easily swap the ground beef for ground turkey, chicken, or a plant-based alternative.
- Besides cheddar, Monterey Jack, pepper jack, and a Mexican cheese blend work great as well.
- You can substitute the Jiffy Cornbread mix with another brand or variety.
- Try using canned biscuit dough for an easy sloppy joe pie crust
- There are “no gluten-containing ingredients” in Manwich sauce per their website. You can swap the Jiffy Cornbread mix with a gluten-free alternative to make this dish gluten-free.
- If you’re looking to add more veggies, you can add chopped bell peppers, canned green chiles, or spinach.
Storage
- Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
- Store in the freezer in an air-tight container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
