When we were developing the recipe, we also made sure to test them in the slow cooker as well. This makes these ribs totally hands-off and too easy to make. It's a foolproof option for ease during a busy week.

Whether you're hosting a summer cookout or a cozy indoor dinner, they're guaranteed to be one the whole family will love. They're delicious served alongside my Macaroni Salad, Classic Potato Salad, or Baked Macaroni and Cheese!

Laura Ashley's Tip: Broil the ribs to finish them off. While this step is optional, it caramelizes the barbecue sauce, making the sticky and sweet coating on top.

What are Country Style Pork Ribs?

We use a boneless variety here. Boneless ribs don’t actually come from the ribs, but are a cut of pork that has a flavor and texture and similar to St. Louis or baby back ribs. They’re often cut from pork shoulder roasts, the blade end near the shoulder.

The fat that is marbled throughout the rib making them extra moist and tender. Slow cooking is ideal to break down the connective tissue and achieve optimal tenderness.

    • Country Style Pork Ribs: Boneless country-style ribs are meatier and more tender than the traditional style, making them perfect for soaking up the flavors of the seasoning and sauce.
    • Pork Seasoning: A blend of spices that enhances the natural flavor of the pork and adds a delicious crust to the ribs. I like using Gabrick BBQ Pork Rub Seasoning.
    • Barbecue Sauce: Use your favorite barbecue sauce! Provides a sweet, tangy, and smoky flavor that caramelizes beautifully during cooking, giving the ribs a mouthwatering glaze. I like using Gabrick BBQ Candy Jalapeno.

    Tools You’ll Need

    • 12"x17" Sheet Pan
    • Aluminum Foil
    • Tongs
    • Measuring Cups and Spoons
    • Liquid Measuring Cups
    • 6 Quart or Larger Crockpot (if using this cooking method)

How to Make Barbecue Country Style Ribs

    1. Preheat your oven to 300°F. Line a large sheet pan with aluminum foil.
    2. Pat the ribs dry with paper towels and place them in a single layer on the prepared sheet pan. Generously season on all sides with the dry rub. Cover the pan tightly with foil. Bake 2 to 2 ½ hours.
    3. Carefully remove the pan from the oven. The ribs produce a lot of liquid, so be careful as you transfer the pan and open the foil. Using a fork, check for the ribs tenderness. They should pull apart easily. If they don’t, re-cover with foil and bake an additional 30 minutes. The cooking time varies with the size of your ribs.
    4. Lower the oven temperature 275°F. Carefully tilt a corner of the sheet pan into a bowl, draining the pan of the liquids. Brush a generous amount of barbecue sauce over all sides of the ribs. Return to the oven. Bake uncovered an additional 30-45 minutes.
    5. Optional step, broil 3-5 minutes for extra barbecue sauce caramelization.
    6. Remove the ribs from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before serving. Brush with additional bbq sauce, if desired.
The steps for making barbecue country style ribs.

How to Make Barbecue Country Style Ribs in the Crockpot

Guess what? You can also make these easily in the slow cooker. This allows you to set it and forget it for several house, making this recipe even easier and more foolproof. We made sure to test it this way for ease on a busy week!

Pour ¾ cup barbecue sauce on the bottom of the Crockpot. Add the seasoned ribs on top, then pour an additional ¾ cup barbecue sauce on top. Cook on low for 8-10 hours. I prefer to cook these on low as they are more tender, but you can cook on high for 5-6 hours if you’d like.

If you like the caramelized, slightly crisp exterior, transfer the ribs to a foil-lined sheet pan. Brush with barbecue sauce, and broil in the oven 3-5 minutes or until the edges begin to caramelize and brown.

    Pro Tips and Substitutions

    • Use Store-bought Seasoning for Ease. You can use a store-bought pork seasoning or spice rub or make your own blend with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, and a touch of brown sugar.
    • Choose your Favorite Barbecue Sauce. Feel free to use your favorite bbq sauce brand. For a different twist, try a honey barbecue sauce or a spicy sauce. You can also opt for a homemade bbq sauce.
    • Try Finishing them on the Grill. While this recipe is designed for baking, you can also grill the ribs for an extra smoky flavor. Simply pre-cook them in the oven, then finish on the grill.
    • You can Marinate in Advance for Even More Flavor. For even more flavor, marinate the ribs in the seasoning overnight before cooking.

What to Serve with Baked Country Style Ribs

It's great to pair these country ribs with sides that complement their rich, savory flavors. Some of our favorite sides to consider are Apple Pie Baked Beans, Crispy Green Beans, Whipped Mashed Potatoes, and Pasta Salad!

Your favorite dinner bread would also be a great pairing. Hoecakes or Cornbread pair well with it. Looking for a lower carb bread, these Keto Dinner Rolls are a great option!

    Storage and Freezing

Store any leftover country style barbecue pork ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

You can also freeze the cooked ribs. Wrap them tightly in aluminum foil or place them in a freezer-safe container, and store for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven for best results.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when the ribs are done?

Boneless country-style pork ribs ribs are done when they are tender and the internal temperature reaches at least 145°F. For more tender ribs, aim for an internal temperature of 190-200°F.

Can I make baked country style ribs in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can make this country style pork ribs recipe in a slow cooker!

Can I use a different cut of pork for this recipe?

Yes, you can use baby back ribs or spare ribs, but keep in mind that the cooking time may vary. Country style ribs are meatier and more tender, so they require a shorter cooking time compared to baby back or spare ribs.

How do I keep the country pork ribs from drying out in the oven?

To keep the ribs moist, cover them with aluminum foil during the initial baking period. This helps retain moisture. Removing the foil towards the end allows the barbecue sauce to caramelize.
