  • Miniature Crackers: Mini saltine crackers are the base of this spicy snack. They provide crunch and an excellent vehicle for flavor.
  • Canola Oil: This helps the seasoning adhere to the crackers and adds a little richness without overpowering the flavor. Vegetable oil can be used as well.
  • Ranch Seasoning Mix: Ranch mix adds a savory, tangy profile to this firecracker recipe that enhances the overall flavor.
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes: These give the Firecrackers their signature spicy kick. Adjust the amount based on your heat preference. Increase or decrease the amount of red pepper flakes to your desired level of heat.
  • Garlic Powder: Adds a robust flavor that complements the ranch and the heat from the red pepper flakes.

Pro Tips and Substitutions

  • Cracker Options: Other than mini saltines, you can use full size saltines, club crackers, ritz crackers, oyster crackers, or cheese crackers or crisps.
  • Oil Substitutes: If you prefer, any neutral oil or melted butter can replace canola oil for a different flavor profile.
  • Flavor Variations: Feel free to experiment with seasonings like Italian seasoning, black pepper, onion powder, smoked paprika, or even a dash of cayenne for extra heat. Instead of a ranch seasoning packet, some of our local restaurants make this seasoned cracker with Old Bay Seasoning and a splash of lemon juice and serves them with chili, crab dip, shrimp, and raw oysters.
  • To Make It Vegetarian: Ensure the ranch seasoning mix is vegetarian-friendly or use a homemade seasoning blend.

  1. I wanted to try this but divide in 3rds. (Using only 1 box) Would I divide the ingredients into 3rds as well? I understand if I don’t want as hot to cut back the red pepper flakes, as left alone,3 boxs, would 1 tbsp be some heat but not too spicy? I use a little bit of red pepper flakes in my Zuppa and it gave some heat in the back of my throat but was overall really good. I didn’t measure, just a couple shakes. But I don’t like heat in general like eating a jalapeno, lol. But I do like taco seasoning and chili. Also, another question, if you ground up red pepper flakes will they become hotter? Thank you Laura! Looking forward to hearing from you, Amy

    1. Great questions! Yes, if you’re only using 1 box of crackers instead of 3, just divide all of the ingredients into thirds so the flavor balance stays about the same.
As for the red pepper flakes, the full recipe (with 3 boxes) calls for about 1 tablespoon, which gives a gentle but noticeable heat. If you’re not a big fan of spicy foods, I’d suggest starting with just ¼ teaspoon to ½ teaspoon for your 1-box batch. You can always add a little more next time if you’d like a touch more kick.
And you’re exactly right, grinding red pepper flakes will make them seem hotter, because the smaller particles distribute more evenly and release more capsaicin into the mix.
      I hope you love them!!

    1. It might be 5-10 minutes less since they’ll be in a thinner layer 🙂 I hope you love them!
