    Tips and Variations

    • Bakeware: If you don’t have a round pan or stone, you can use a 12-cup fluted tube cake pan. Spray with cooking spray. Place both bread loaves in the pan in a circle. Pinch ends together. Bake 34-38 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly, then transfer the bread to a cooling rack. You can also bake it on a sheet pan in one long subway bread loaf.
    • Bread Seasoning Options: Besides the garlic egg wash and Italian seasoning, these are some yummy seasonings you can opt to add or substitute on your bread loaves: garlic powder, parmesan cheese, rosemary, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, every bagel seasoning, cheddar cheese, onion flakes, dried basil, dried dill, coarse salt, pumpkin seeds
    • Golden Bread Crust: You can also achieve a beautiful golden crust by brushing the bread with melted butter, olive oil, or milk instead of an egg wash.
    • Homemade Bread: If you prefer a homemade bread alternative, this Homemade French Bread is also crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.

    Storage and Freezing

The texture of the party sub sandwich toppings may change after refrigeration, so consider omitting more delicate ingredients if you anticipate having leftovers. Freezing and thawing leftovers is not ideal.

Refrigeration: Wrap each sub individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Alternatively, place them in airtight containers. Consume leftover sub sandwiches within 1-2 days for the best quality. After this period, the bread may become soggy.

Reheating (Optional): If you prefer a warm sub, you can reheat it in the oven at a low temperature (around 300°F or 150°C) for about 10-15 minutes. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the bread soggy. Also, take off more delicate toppings that would be compromised in the oven.

    FAQs

How do I prevent the bread from becoming too crispy?

Keep an eye on the baking time, and if you notice it browning too quickly, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil to prevent excessive crisping.

Can I prepare the Pillsbury French bread loaf in advance for a party?

Yes, you can bake the bread, cool it, and then store it in an air-tight container until you’re ready to build your sandwich.

Do I have to brush the loaf with an egg wash?

No, you don't have to brush your bread with an egg wash. While an egg wash is often used to give bread a shiny and golden appearance, you can also achieve this by brushing the bread with melted butter, olive oil, or milk.

Is the Pillsbury French Bread dough loaf gluten-free?

No, this store-bought refrigerated bread dough is not gluten-free.

Can I make this sub sandwich with homemade bread?

If you prefer a homemade bread alternative, this Homemade French Bread is also crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.

How did you get the dough to stretch out on the pan? Mine cooked up very small.

I usually hold both ends of the dough about a foot apart and bounce the dough up and down until it stretches to the length I want 🙂
