    Ingredients

Scroll Down for Ingredient Amounts Listed in the Recipe Card Below.

    • Boxed Cake Mix: This raw ingredient that is baked for a few minutes is the primary flavoring agent and provides the classic taste of cake batter. It also contributes to the sweetness and texture of the dip.
    • Cream Cheese: Adds richness and creaminess to the dip. It also helps to stabilize the mixture and gives it a smooth consistency. The tanginess of cream cheese balances out the sweetness of the cake mix and cool whip.
    • Cool Whip: Provides lightness and fluffiness to the dip. It adds airiness and helps to create a softer texture.
    • Greek Yogurt: Adds tanginess and creaminess to the dip while also providing some thickness.
    • Vanilla Extract: It helps to round out the sweetness and adds depth to the overall taste.
    • Sprinkles: Fun sprinkles are used for decoration as well as a slight crunch and bursts of sweetness throughout the mixture. You can switch up your sprinkle colors for the occasion you're serving it at.

    • Mixing Bowl
    • Spatula

How to Make Cake Batter Sprinkle Dip

    1. It's recommended by the CDC to spread the raw cake mix out on a baking sheet pan in an even layer and bake at 350°F for 5 minutes. Allow it to cool.
    2. In a large mixing bowl, blend together the cake mix, cream cheese, yogurt, and vanilla extract with an electric mixer or spatula until smooth.
using a hand mixer to combine ingredients
    1. Fold in the whipped topping and the sprinkles until well combined.
Adding the sprinkles to the mixed cake batter dip
    1. Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle additional sprinkles on top. The dye in sprinkles can sometimes bleed, so it's best to add the sprinkles on top right before serving. Add the dip to a platter with all your favorite dippers!

    Expert Tips and Substitutions

    • Yogurt: Skyr is strained whole milk yogurt. Siggi’s is the brand I prefer because I like its balance of tartness and sweetness. Any regular or low-fat vanilla Greek yogurt or regular vanilla yogurt can work in this dip. It will slightly change the texture and the level of sweetness
    • Dip Pairings: Get creative with dippers! My go-to accouterments are fresh fruit (berries, grapes, apples, bananas, peaches), Teddy Grahams or Annie's Cookies, honey graham crackers, chocolate graham crackers, animal crackers, vanilla wafer cookies, funfetti cookies, spread the dip on pancakes, waffles, or toast
    • Homemade Cake Mix: If you want to substitute with a homemade cake mix, here are the ingredients of a standard cake mix box. You can adjust the measurements for what’s needed in this recipe of make the whole thing and store the rest for later use: 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ cups granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 tsp salt
    • Make for Different Holidays: You can swap out the sprinkles and adjust the ingredients to align with different holidays. This Grinch Dip is an excellent festive option for Christmas!

How to Consume Cake Mix Safely

Germs are killed only when flour is baked or cooked. CDC investigated outbreaks linked to raw flour or cake mix in 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2023. Some of these investigations led to recalls.

The dry cake mix needs to reach an internal temperature of 160°F then cool completely before mixing in the dip. You can do this in two ways:

    • Oven Method: Spread the raw flour evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Place the baking sheet in the preheated 350°F oven and bake for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, use a food thermometer to check and ensured it's reached at least 160°F.
    • Microwave Method: Place the raw flour in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high power in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each interval. After each interval, check the temperature of the flour using a food thermometer. Continue microwaving and stirring until the flour reaches at least 160°F.

    Make Ahead and Storage Tips

Yes, you can prepare this delicious dessert dip ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Just give it a good stir before serving. Wait to add the sprinkles on top right before serving as the color(s) can bleed.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. This dip doesn’t freeze and thaw well due to the varying dairy components.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Can I use any type of cake mix for this dip?
      • Yes, you can use any type of cake mix you prefer, such as vanilla, white cake mix, funfetti, chocolate, or even red velvet.
    • Is it necessary to use cream cheese in the recipe?
      • Cream cheese adds richness and creaminess to the dip, but if you prefer a lighter version, you can omit it or substitute with a lighter cream cheese or Greek yogurt.
    • Can I adjust the sweetness of the dip?
      • Absolutely! Feel free to adjust the amount of cake mix or sweetener according to your preference. You can also add more or fewer sprinkles depending on how sweet you'd like it.
    • Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of Cool Whip?
      • Yes! Fresh whipped cream works great! To make homemade whipped cream, in a large bowl on high speed, blend together ¾ cup heaving whipping cream, ¼ cup powered sugar and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract until stiff peaks form, about 1-2 minutes.
    • Can I make this dip dairy-free or vegan?
      • Yes, you can use dairy-free cream cheese, whipped topping, and yogurt alternatives to make this dip dairy-free or vegan-friendly.
    • Can I use different types of sprinkles or toppings?
      • Absolutely! Get creative with your toppings and try different types of sprinkles, such as chocolate chips, crushed cookies, or chopped nuts, to customize the dip to your liking.
    • How can I prevent the sprinkles from bleeding into the dip?
      • To prevent the colors from bleeding, you can fold in the sprinkles gently right before serving and avoid overmixing. You can also refrigerate the dip for a short while before serving to help set the sprinkles
