Recipe Tips and Variations
Homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning: This is easy to make and stores well in an airtight container up to 3 months. Here are the ingredients:
2 tablespoons white sesame seeds
1 tablespoon black sesame seeds
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
1 tablespoon dried minced onion
1 teaspoon flaky sea salt (adjust to taste)
Au Jus Gravy Mix Options: You can use a regular or low-sodium packaged Au Jus mix. You can also make it from scratch. Here the ingredients:
2 tablespoons regular or low-sodium beef bouillon granules or beef base
1 tablespoon cornstarch
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon dried thyme
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Meat Tips and Substitutes: Choose a high-quality deli meat for optimal satisfaction! Personally, I prefer Boar's Head Seasoned Filet of Roast Beef sliced at the deli counter. If you have leftover roast beef or prefer to make your beef from scratch, slice or chop it in easy-to-eat pieces. You can also make these with leftover sliced prime rib.
Cheese Options: Besides provolone and muenster cheese, you can also use American cheese, havarti, mozzarella, Swiss cheese, gouda, fontina, cheddar cheese, gruyere, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack cheeses. Gorgonzola and blue cheese can add a unique flavor profile as well.
Sautéed Veggies: Adding caramelized sweet onions and mushrooms adds volume, texture, and amazing flavors. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil or a pat of butter. Once melted, add sliced onions and mushrooms. Caramelizing takes time, usually around 15-20 minutes, stirring them occasionally. Add water to the pan as they cook if needed.
