- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound bacon
- 3 16 ounce cans baked beans 1 or 2 cans drained
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar or sugar substitute
- 1/2 cup brown sugar or brown sugar substitute
- 1 tablespoon dijon or yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2-1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2-1 teaspoon black pepper
Cook bacon until crispy in a skillet or in the oven (see oven method) and transfer to a paper towel lined plate. Chop cooled bacon slices into small pieces.
Preheat oven to 350ºF.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, crumble and cook ground beef until no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease using a paper towel in the skillet or drain in a colander and return to the pan.
To the cooked beef, add drained and undrained beans (see note), granulated sugar, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, apple cider vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and bacon. Stir the mixture until well combined. Taste and adjust flavors as desired.
Pour the mixture into a 13"x9" pan or 3-quart baking dish. Bake 45-50 minutes or until thickened and set.
Approximate nutrition information represents a 1/2 cup serving using regular sugar and brown sugar. This recipe yields approximately 9 cups. The carbohydrate and calorie content can greatly decrease if granulated sugar and brown sugar substitutes are used instead.
