Ingredients

  • 14 cups water
  • ½-3/4 cup kosher salt
  • 1 ½ pound raw jumbo peanuts in the shell not roasted
  • Cajun Style: Lower the Kosher salt to ¼-1/3 cup and add 3 tablespoons cajun seasoning I use Tony Chachere's Cajun Seasoning
  • Optional Add-in: 1-2 tablespoons hot sauce and 1-2 teaspoons garlic powder

Instructions

  • Rinse the raw peanuts under cold water to remove any dirt.Place the peanuts in the crockpot.
  • Add kosher salt and additional seasonings as desired. Cajun seasoning, hot sauce, and garlic powder can also be added. Adjust the quantities based on your preference for spiciness and flavor.
  • Pour enough water into the crockpot to fully submerge the peanuts and allow room for them to expand during cooking. The peanuts should be covered by about 2 inches of water.
  • Set the crockpot to the low or high temperature setting. Low Setting (Recommended) 18-24 hours. High Setting: 10-12 hours.
  • After the initial cooking time, check the peanuts for doneness. They should be tender and flavorful. If needed, continue cooking until they reach the desired consistency. Taste the boiled peanuts and adjust the seasonings as necessary. Add more Cajun seasoning, salt, or hot sauce based on your taste preferences.

Expert Recipe Tips

    • Shell-on Peanuts: It's best to use raw or green peanuts that are still in the shell.
    • Sodium Content: Adjust salt according to your taste preferences. You can always start with less and add more if needed during cooking.
    • Seasoning Options: Besides cajun seasoning, you can experiment with additional seasonings like smoked paprika, garlic powder, or chili powder to add a unique flavor to your boiled peanuts.
    • Short Cooking Method: If you prefer a shorter cooking time, you can start with raw, shelled nuts, but the traditional method uses nuts in their shells.
    • Different Nuts: While traditionally made with peanuts, you can experiment with other nuts like cashews or almonds using a similar boiling method.
    • Add Spice: Cajun boiled peanuts are known for their spiciness. Adjust the amount of Cajun seasoning and hot sauce to suit your spice tolerance. See recipe on how much seasoning and how to adjust the amount of salt.
Storage Tips:

    • Refrigeration: If you plan to consume boiled peanuts within a few days, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Boiled peanuts can generally be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.
    • Freezing: If you have a large batch or want to store boiled peanuts for an extended period, freezing is a good option. Allow the boiled peanuts to cool completely before transferring them to a freezer-safe, airtight container or freezer bags. Boiled peanuts can be frozen for several months. While they won't spoil after this time, their quality might gradually decline.
    • In Brine: Some people prefer storing boiled peanuts in the brine (the cooking liquid). This helps keep them flavorful and prevents them from drying out. Place the boiled peanuts along with the brine in an airtight container and refrigerate. This method is suitable for short-term storage.
    • Thawing: When ready to eat, thaw frozen boiled peanuts in the refrigerator overnight. Consuming them while they are still slightly chilled can be refreshing.
    • Quality Check: Before consuming refrigerated or thawed boiled peanuts, check for any signs of spoilage, such as off smells or changes in texture. Discard any peanuts that appear discolored or have an unpleasant odor.
